History of the Convent
In 1909, the sisters of the Buffalo Province purchased the Henessy-O’Hare estate in Lodi, NJ to establish a new province closer to New York City. On this 22-acre estate, they converted the stone residence and a millhouse — later known as “the little red house,” into a novitiate. As vocations grew, the sisters built a new provincial home. Although World War I slowed construction, the stately brick chapel and west wing were dedicated in 1915. In 1923, the Immaculate Conception Summer Normal School opened on the campus as a training school for teachers. It evolved into a junior college by 1941, became Felician College in 1967, and eventually Felician University in 1995. In 2023, reflecting their commitment to stewardship, the Felician Sisters of North America began a multi-stage project to create more green space on their Lodi campus and better serve needs of both the sisters and the campus communities who share the property.
