History of the Convent
Felician Sisters arrived in Western Pennsylvania in 1920 and resided in a temporary motherhouse in McKeesport. By 1931, they dedicated Our Lady of the Sacred Heart convent in Coraopolis, eleven miles outside of Pittsburgh. Constructed on the summit of a hill, the E-shaped structure consists of three-story red brick buildings with stone trim, overlooking the Ohio Valley. A beautiful chapel stands in the middle, with the motherhouse in one wing, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School in the other. In 2003, the sisters took a monumental leap of faith, engaging in an environmentally friendly total renovation. The remodeled building, which exemplifies “green design” principles and Franciscan values, integrates the convent and the school with intergenerational spaces and earned a LEED Gold certification.
