Felician Mission: Haiti

After a 2010 earthquake left Haiti devastated, a group of Felician Sisters visited the country to consider opening a mission. Sr. Marilyn Marie Minter returned in 2012, bringing along Sr. Mary Inga Borko. With the blessing of their congregation, Srs. Marilyn and Inga visited with the people to learn about their needs, found a place to lay down roots, and began what Sr. Marilyn calls “a compassionate ministry of presence.”

Felician Mission: Tulita
Tulita, NWT
In 1979, Sister Mary Celeste Goulet began a ministry of presence to the indigenous Slavey people in Tulita, a remote village in the Northwest Territories of Canada, approximately 200 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Over the years, she has dedicated her life to this community, establishing a preschool program for the children as well as pastoral service for Saint Therese of Avila Mission.
Longtime director of the Sr. Celeste Child Care Center, named in her honor by the local people, Sr. Celeste created a preschool curriculum that honors the indigenous language and culture. At the mission, she both prepares the people for and administers the sacraments, presiding over baptisms, first communions, weddings and funerals. She leads Sunday communion services when a priest is not available.
With her gentle and cheerful nature, Sr. Celeste brings God to the people, while respecting their ancestral heritage and commitment to the earth. Because of her faithful service and friendship with the people, Sr. Celeste is considered an elder in the North Slavey community.
