Marking 150 Years Through a Student Service Project

Madonna University students created personalized cards for every Felician Sister, reflecting on their lives and ministries.

As part of the closing of the Felician Sisters’ 150th anniversary celebrations, Madonna University students in Livonia, Michigan participated in a meaningful service project. The project invited students to create handmade cards for every Felician Sister, combining messages honoring the jubilee year with expressions of gratitude for the sisters’ lifelong service and impact in the world.

Approximately 60–65 students took part in the project, creating a total of 345 cards, one for each Felician Sister. Students were assigned a select number of sisters and encouraged to research them online, such as reading a short biography or learning about their ministries. This process allowed students to personalize their messages while gaining a deeper appreciation for the lives and work of women religious.

The project unfolded over several weeks as part of a first-year course and the university’s Franciscan Days of Service. After the cards were completed, students assisted with organizing, addressing and mailing them in anticipation of the November 21 anniversary date. Through this service project, students were introduced to the history of the Felician Sisters, the legacy of Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and the enduring continuity of the congregation’s mission over the past 150+ years.

Serving where needed since 1874

Founded in Poland in 1855, the Felician Sisters are a congregation of women religious inspired by the spiritual ideals of their foundress, Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and Saints Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi and Felix of Cantalice. Arriving in North America in 1874 following Blessed Mary Angela’s directive “to serve where needed,” they helped to weave the social service system. Today, the Felician Sisters founded, sponsor or support through the presence of our sisters, more than 40 ministries – all continuing to evolve to meet the needs of the people they serve.
