For generations, Maryville Retreat Center in Holly, MI has welcomed all who seek rest, reflection and renewal. Nestled among peaceful woodlands and rolling hills, this sacred space—rooted in the mission of Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska—continues to serve as a sanctuary for spiritual growth, personal restoration and meaningful connection.
Maryville’s mission is to provide a peaceful and welcoming environment for individuals and groups to deepen their relationship with God, self, others and creation. Rooted in the Felician Franciscan tradition, the center fosters spiritual growth, renewal and reflection through prayer, hospitality and holistic programming.
Founded in 1945 as Guardian Angel Summer Camp for girls from the Felician Sisters’ Detroit orphanage, the property evolved into a formal retreat center in 1979. A new main building added in the 1980s included a chapel, dining area, lodging and conference spaces, opening Maryville’s doors to individuals and groups of all faiths.
Now, under the leadership of Executive Director Sr. Noel Marie Gabriel and Director Nick Osantoski, Maryville is undergoing a period of thoughtful transformation. With extensive upgrades and expanded programming, the center is evolving to meet the needs of today’s spiritual seekers—while remaining firmly grounded in the Felician Sisters’ mission and values.
Expanding Programs and Outreach
Sr. Noel is expanding Maryville’s mission by offering a broader range of programs—from short weekday getaways to full weekend retreats. Guests can participate in spiritual formation, prayerful contemplation or community-building activities while enjoying amenities such as walking trails, a fire pit, swing gliders and kayaking.
Outreach efforts are also underway to engage corporate groups, families and youth organizations—and Maryville also welcomes groups looking to host their own programming in a peaceful and inspiring setting. Spiritual Direction is available both in-person and online, offering flexible support for your journey of faith.
Maryville also offers a variety of enriching programs, including:
- Directed Retreat Week: A silent retreat featuring individualized spiritual direction with Sisters Judith Marie Blizzard and Jane Mary Gawlik.
- Encountering God Through Art: Deepen your connection with God through Scripture-based reflection and creative expression using clay, ink and watercolor guided by Sisters Judy and Jane.
- Wholly Healthy with God: A holistic look at how physical health enhances spiritual well-being with Sr. Noel.
- Wisdom from Women in Scripture: Explore the strength, courage and wisdom of women in the Bible through guided reflection and discussion, hosted by Sr. Jane.
Modern Comfort Meets Sacred Hospitality
Significant renovations have enhanced both comfort and accessibility. ADA-compliant entrances and restrooms, newly furnished bedrooms and Peace Rooms, and updated cabinetry in dining and conference areas provide a welcoming and inclusive environment.
The San Damiano Center boasts a new entryway, coat closet and improved kitchen, while a remodeled lakeview conference room offers breathtaking views in a serene, functional space. To meet the needs of guests, high-speed f iber internet has been installed in every building.
Outside, retreatants can enjoy a newly constructed walkway, floating dock and sand beach along the lake. A decorative entry fence adds both beauty and security.
Maryville continues to grow as a space of sacred renewal and welcome for all.
