Living Laudato Si’: Earth Day as a Call to Care for Creation

Celebrate Earth Day through Laudato Si’ with prayer, simple living and community action that deepens care for creation and our shared responsibility for the common home.

Earth Day offers a meaningful opportunity to renew our commitment to care for our common home—an invitation deeply rooted in the spirit of Laudato Si’. For the Felician Sisters and all who share in this mission, it is a time to embrace integral ecology by uniting prayer, simple living and collective action.

At its heart, integral ecology reminds us that care for creation is inseparable from care for one another, especially those most impacted by environmental degradation. This Earth Day, we are invited to respond not only with awareness, but with intentional practices that nurture both the earth and the human spirit.

Spiritual and Contemplative Practices
Creation itself is a sacred space where God is revealed. Consider setting aside time for a contemplative nature walk, practicing Visio Divina—praying with eyes open to the beauty of the natural world. Communities may also gather for prayer services centered on gratitude for creation and repentance for ecological harm. Lifting up prayers for environmental justice keeps us mindful of those who suffer most from climate change and environmental injustice.

Adopting a Simpler, More Sustainable Lifestyle
Small, everyday choices can reflect a profound commitment to stewardship. Reducing energy and water usage, limiting single-use plastics and practicing mindful consumption are tangible ways to live this call. Initiatives like “Meatless Mondays” help lessen our environmental footprint while fostering a spirit of simplicity. Choosing eco-friendly transportation options and preparing only what we need can further align our lives with care for creation.

Community Action and Education
Earth Day is also an opportunity to act together. Planting a Mary Garden—filled with flowers that honor the Blessed Mother—can serve as both a spiritual and ecological expression of devotion. Communities might also consider conducting energy audits of their buildings, exploring sustainable improvements such as LED lighting or renewable energy options. Organizing recycling efforts, planting trees or hosting educational workshops on Laudato Si’ can deepen awareness and inspire lasting change.

Continuing the Journey
The call of Laudato Si’ extends beyond a single day. Resources like the Catholic Climate Covenant and the Laudato Si’ Action Platform offer pathways for ongoing commitment, helping individuals and communities set meaningful, long-term sustainability goals.

This Earth Day, may we be renewed in our calling to serve where we are most needed—caring for creation, advocating for justice and living in harmony with all God has made.

Serving where needed since 1874

Founded in Poland in 1855, the Felician Sisters are a congregation of women religious inspired by the spiritual ideals of their foundress, Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and Saints Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi and Felix of Cantalice. Arriving in North America in 1874 following Blessed Mary Angela’s directive “to serve where needed,” they helped to weave the social service system. Today, the Felician Sisters founded, sponsor or support through the presence of our sisters, more than 40 ministries – all continuing to evolve to meet the needs of the people they serve.
