Schools in the state of South Carolina have been closed since March 14, and according to director Sr. Mary Susanne Dziedzic, the impact on Felician Center has been huge and ongoing. “The ministry has not been stagnant during these months and at times it has been exhausting as volunteers are not yet ready to return to help,” said Sr. Susanne. “Poor or unavailable health resources among the rural economically disadvantaged population are keeping us distanced from one another.”
To bring some cheer, the Center hosted a Christmas in July event for children in the community. While singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” the Sisters, wearing holiday headbands, greeted the youngsters, challenging them to throw cotton balls at one another as “snowballs,” to wear red and green and to make a Christmas card and send it to someone.
Each child received a Christmas bag with wrapped gifts, including a new t-shirt, pair of socks and pillowcase. Candy and snacks were also included, as well as a Christmas activity book, small stuffed animal and pocket-sized tissues, all donated by various benefactors.
Through another benefactor, hundreds of beautiful face masks supporting Centro San Juan Diego ministry with the youth of New Mexico were recently donated. In the corner of each mask is a picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe with the hope and prayer for Mary’s protection on the one who wears it.
Schools are scheduled to open after Labor Day with on-site face-to-face and virtual learning options, but COVID-19 cases in the state are on the rise, and protocols seem to change daily.
Sr. Susanne asks for your continued prayers for them and their neighbors during this uncertain time.
