The Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, NM recently published a reflection by Felician Sr. Mary Angela Parkins, President and CEO of St. Felix Pantry. An educational nonprofit founded by Franciscan Fr. Richard Rohr, the CAC introduces seekers to the Christian path of transformation. In their work, a contemplative, compassionate approach to engaging with the world balances opportunities for reflection with working for social justice. Sr. Angela’s piece is part of a series that explores ways to show solidarity with the most vulnerable.
Since 2017, Sr. Angela has led St. Felix Pantry, which serves more than 1,000 guests each week, providing food, compassionate support, and referral services for those in need. In her reflection, Sr. Angela writes about service to others as a catalyst for hope and equity. “Justice and peace go together like beans and rice,” she says. “Beans and rice, together, create a complete protein. Justice and peace, together, create hope and equity.”
