Petition to Stem Crisis in Haiti

Support efforts to address the crisis in Haiti by advocating for stronger measures to stop illegal arms flow and protect vulnerable communities.

The Felician Sisters support efforts to address the worsening crisis in Haiti. A petition has been submitted to the Secretary of Homeland Security with the following suggested actions:

  • Increase Customs and Border Protection resources dedicated to screening the contents of ships exiting via the Miami River Port.
  • Urge the President to issue an executive order to prevent assault rifles, .50 caliber rifles, and high-capacity magazines from getting into the hands of cartels and gangs.
  • Work with the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to implement a strategy to increase the number of firearms recovered in Haiti that are submitted for tracing.
  • Initiate an interagency strategy, together with the State Department, Commerce Department, and Department of Justice, to increase resources to stop the illegal flow of arms from the United States.
  • Extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitians and end deportation flights until their country is a place to which they can return without reasonable expectation of “torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, or other irreparable harm” (United Nations)

The Felician Sisters encourage all people of goodwill to support these efforts and advocate for peace and justice in Haiti.

Serving where needed since 1874

Founded in Poland in 1855, the Felician Sisters are a congregation of women religious inspired by the spiritual ideals of their foundress, Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and Saints Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi and Felix of Cantalice. Arriving in North America in 1874 following Blessed Mary Angela’s directive “to serve where needed,” they helped to weave the social service system. Today, the Felician Sisters founded, sponsor or support through the presence of our sisters, more than 40 ministries – all continuing to evolve to meet the needs of the people they serve.
