Felician Sisters of North America Call for Peace and Protection of Civilians Amid Escalating Conflict Involving Iran

The Felician Sisters of North America call for peace and the protection of civilians amid the escalating conflict involving Iran, urging compassion, justice, and global solidarity.

The Felician Sisters of North America affirm their unwavering commitment to human dignity, peace and justice in response to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

“As a community dedicated to serving those most vulnerable, we are deeply concerned about the escalating violence and its devastating impact on civilians,” said Sr. Maryann Agnes Mueller, Justice and Peace Coordinator. “Our prayers are with all who are suffering, and we call on all parties to pursue peace through dialogue, diplomacy and respect for human life.”

Affirming the Dignity of Every Human Life
Every person is created in the image of God and deserves safety, respect and the opportunity to flourish. War and military escalation inflict disproportionate suffering on civilians — including women, children, the elderly and the displaced — and worsen human misery rather than resolving underlying causes of conflict.

Calling for Peace, Diplomacy and De-escalation
Guided by the Gospel call to be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9), the Felician Sisters urge all parties to choose peace over violence and to engage in sustained diplomacy grounded in international law and human rights. History shows that only serious, inclusive dialogue can build bridges and foster lasting reconciliation.

Mourning the Suffering of Civilians
We grieve the loss of life and the profound hardships that conflict brings, including displacement, trauma and the breakdown of families and communities. Our prayers are with all who suffer and with those laboring for peace.

Encouraging Protective and Humanitarian Action
The Felician Sisters support efforts to protect civilians, provide humanitarian relief and uphold human dignity. Accountability for human rights abuses committed by any government or armed group is essential.

Upholding Catholic Social Teaching
Our stance reflects core Catholic principles: war must be a last resort, the innocent must be protected and the common good prioritized. Leaders and citizens alike are called to work courageously for justice, reconciliation, and human flourishing.

Committing to Prayer and Action
We invite our sisters, associates, partners and all people of goodwill to join us in prayer for peace, advocate for humanitarian responses that protect life and dignity, and support initiatives that foster understanding and a just world for all.

In these challenging times, we reaffirm our commitment to stand with all who suffer, to advocate for peace, and to bear witness to the inherent dignity of every human life. Guided by our faith, inspired by Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and rooted in the Franciscan call to serve, we remain steadfast in prayer and action for a world marked by justice, reconciliation, and enduring peace.

Serving where needed since 1874

Founded in Poland in 1855, the Felician Sisters are a congregation of women religious inspired by the spiritual ideals of their foundress, Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and Saints Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi and Felix of Cantalice. Arriving in North America in 1874 following Blessed Mary Angela’s directive “to serve where needed,” they helped to weave the social service system. Today, the Felician Sisters founded, sponsor or support through the presence of our sisters, more than 40 ministries – all continuing to evolve to meet the needs of the people they serve.
