Called in Second Grade: A Felician Sister’s Michigan Story

A family steeped in faith, and an aunt who shared her name, set her on the path to religious life.

“The Felician Difference” Vocation Reflection

By: Sr. Beatrice Marie Plamondon

I was born on August 27, 1946, in Traverse City, Michigan as Beatrice Marie Plamondon. Sister Mary Bernardine Fabizak, my mom’s youngest sister, entered the Felician community the year my parents were married. Since I was born the same month as my aunt, who was also named Beatrice, my calling to become a sister began in the second grade.

My education continued at the Felician Academy in Detroit, where I attended High School. My parents had twelve children living on our Plamondon farm in Lake Leelanau. Many relatives on my parents’ side of the family entered religious life. My older sister, Rita entered as a postulant with me but was asked to leave because of health reasons. Sister Maxine Plamondon went to Grand Rapids in 1963 and is a Dominican Sister. We celebrate our anniversaries together. Another relative is my Dad’s cousin, Brother Andre Bessette. Sr. Maxine and I were privileged to attend his Canonization in October 2010.

My daily needs are met by the Holy Eucharistic Lord. I thank Him for the joy and opportunity to serve others the best I can.

Serving where needed since 1874

Founded in Poland in 1855, the Felician Sisters are a congregation of women religious inspired by the spiritual ideals of their foundress, Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, and Saints Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi and Felix of Cantalice. Arriving in North America in 1874 following Blessed Mary Angela’s directive “to serve where needed,” they helped to weave the social service system. Today, the Felician Sisters founded, sponsor or support through the presence of our sisters, more than 40 ministries – all continuing to evolve to meet the needs of the people they serve.
