Did You Know? Seven Inspiring Facts About Blessed Mary Angela.

Celebrating the Legacy of the Foundress of the Felician Sisters

As we journey through this year of celebration and reflection, we take a moment to revisit the remarkable life of Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, foundress of the Felician Sisters, born on May 16, 1825 in Kalisz, Poland. Her story is filled with courage, compassion and unwavering faith. Here are seven inspiring facts you may not know about her life and legacy:

From Nobility to Humility
Born in 1825 into Polish nobility, young Angela had access to wealth and education. But instead of choosing a life of comfort, she chose a path of service—dedicating herself to the poor, the sick and the forgotten. Her compassion knew no bounds.

She Didn’t Take “No” for an Answer
Angela felt called to religious life, but she was initially turned away—twice. Still, she remained faithful to her vocation. In 1855, with God’s grace and her unshakable resolve, she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Felix of Cantalice, known today as the Felician Sisters.

She Risked Her Life to Care for the Sick
During a cholera outbreak in Warsaw, Angela and her companions took to the streets, tending to the ill and dying with their own hands. Her love for God and neighbor drove her into the very heart of suffering.

A Pioneer for Women’s Education
Long before women’s empowerment became a movement, Blessed Mary Angela championed the education of girls. She established schools and orphanages where young women could learn, grow and become leaders in faith and service.

Her Vision Reached Across the Ocean
In 1874, the Felician Sisters arrived in North America to minister to Polish immigrants. Today, Blessed Angela’s legacy continues across the U.S., Canada, and beyond—touching lives through education, healthcare, social services and spiritual ministries.

She Lived with a Smile
Despite trials and illness, Angela’s favorite prayer was: “All for Jesus, through Mary, with a smile.” That simple phrase captured the heart of her spirituality—serving others joyfully, even in sacrifice.

One Step from Sainthood
In 1993, Pope John Paul II beatified her, proclaiming her Blessed. As we await her canonization, her spirit continues to inspire us to live lives of mercy, humility and wholehearted devotion.
