Each year on May 16, the Felician Sisters pause in gratitude and joy to celebrate the birthday of Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, whose life of deep faith and courageous love continues to inspire a global legacy of ministry, service and hope.
Born in 1825 in Poland during a time of political unrest and poverty, Blessed Mary Angela recognized a call that would define her life: to serve Christ through the poorest and most vulnerable. With bold trust in Divine Providence, she founded the Felician Sisters—a community rooted in Franciscan spirituality and compassion in action.
Her vision was both simple and radical: to live the Gospel through works of mercy. Through caring for orphans, the sick, the elderly and those on society’s margins, she created not just ministries, but a way of life grounded in dignity, respect and love.
Today, that same spirit lives on through the ministries of the Felician Sisters around the world, including the work of the Felician Sisters of North America. Her legacy is seen in social service programs, classrooms, retreat centers, healthcare ministries and wherever compassionate service is most needed.
What makes Blessed Mary Angela’s influence so enduring is not only what she built, but how she built it—with humility, trust in Providence and a readiness to respond to human need. That same spirit continues today through sisters, associates and lay partners who carry her mission forward through justice, environmental stewardship, education and everyday acts of kindness.
As we honor her birthday, we celebrate not simply a historical figure, but a living charism—one that continues to challenge us to trust more deeply, to “serve where needed,” and see every person as a sacred gift.
Happy Birthday, Blessed Mary Angela! Your spirit still walks with us!
