For Felician Sisters, founded in Franciscan spirituality, every day is Earth Day.
Nevertheless, Felician Sisters and ministries celebrated April 22 around the province with planting. Following are some highlights.
The dreary morning rain did not dampen the spirit of the festive Earth Day Celebration at the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent in Livonia, MI as sisters and employees gathered to plant a beautiful Japanese maple tree in front of the building, to start marigolds from seed, and to propagate plants for the community room.
At Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School in Coraopolis, PA students celebrated Earth Day by planting their own personal pots of flowers and vegetables.
At Villa St. Francis in Milwauke, WI residents planted vegetable seeds that they will transplant into outdoor gardens. The residents will water, weed and harvest the vegetables, to donate to the Capuchin Franciscan House of Peace food pantry. The Earth Day event began with communal prayer based on excerpts from scripture, Laudato Si’, and St. Francis’s “Canticle of the Creatures,” invoking God’s blessing on their endeavor to become better brothers and sisters to all of God’s creation.
